“See How God Loves You” — As we near the end of our sermon series on the miracles of Jesus, we look at the seventh and final miracle that leads up to Jesus’ last days, the raising of Lazarus from the dead.  Rev. Schaefer points out that, according to the Jewish tradition, Lazarus was not just technically dead, which would have excused a couple of days in the tomb.  Some of the other miracles that were told about Jesus showed Jesus awaking people from death (or perhaps medical near death), such as Jarius’ daughter, the son of the woman from Nairn or the son of the official.  But Lazarus was DEAD. In fact, he was four DAYS dead.  But had Jesus come sooner, as Mary and Martha pleaded for him to do, he would not have shown this final sign of the coming of the messiah.  The prophet would be marked by the blind seeing, the lame walking, the dead being raised, and the good news being preached to the poor.  He brought Lazarus back to life, followed immediately by bringing God back to Jerusalem.  We also need to bring God back into our world today, to love others with the love Jesus showed Lazarus, Mary and Martha, and share the good news of the gospel with all people.
